The FURUNO FAR-2827 is a professional 25kW X-band marine radar designed for commercial ships, cargo vessels, tankers, offshore vessels and other ocean-going ships. It forms part of FURUNO’s established FAR-2107/FAR-2807 radar family.
Related S-band and earlier-generation models include the FAR-2837S, FAR-2825, FAR-2835S and FAR-2855. These systems remain installed on many vessels and continue to generate demand for replacement processors, control units, scanners, monitors, magnetrons and electronic boards.
The photographed set appears to include a radar scanner unit, RPU-013 processor, RCU-014 control unit, FURUNO monitor and associated signal cables.

Customers sometimes search for FURUNO 35kW radar or FURUNO 55kW radar because of model numbers FAR-2835 and FAR-2855. However, their actual nominal transmitter outputs are normally 30kW and 50kW, respectively.
The RPU-013 processes radar echo signals and generates the radar picture. It also manages ARPA tracking, target trails, alarms, external sensor data and display output.
The RCU-014 provides dedicated controls for range, gain, sea clutter, rain clutter, EBL, VRM, target acquisition and radar-menu operation.
The RCU-015 trackball controller and RCU-016 remote controller may also be found in some configurations.
The original FAR-2827 system was commonly supplied with the MU-231CR 23.1-inch colour LCD. Other compatible marine monitors may be installed depending on the vessel’s configuration.
The photographed set appears to use a FURUNO MU-190 monitor. Its compatibility and display input should be tested with the supplied RPU-013 before delivery.
The FAR-2827 typically uses an X-band open-array antenna with a compatible scanner gearbox and RTR-079 transmitter/receiver module. Scanner, antenna size and rotation speed vary according to the vessel’s installation.
X-band radar provides detailed target presentation and good detection of small vessels, buoys and coastal objects. It is commonly used for navigation, collision avoidance and close-range observation.
S-band radar generally performs better during heavy rain, fog and adverse weather. Large commercial ships often operate one X-band and one S-band radar for improved navigational awareness.

Possible causes include a worn magnetron, transmitter high-voltage fault, processor error, interlock problem or damaged scanner cable.
Check the magnetron condition, receiver sensitivity, waveguide or coaxial connection, scanner unit and antenna surface. Incorrect gain or clutter settings can also reduce target visibility.
Inspect the scanner motor, gearbox, drive mechanism, power supply, fuse and scanner-control circuit.
Check the RPU-013 power-supply boards, cooling fans, internal connectors and supply voltage. High-voltage servicing must only be performed by qualified personnel.
Inspect connections from the gyrocompass, GPS and speed log. Confirm that the correct data format and interface settings are selected.
Incorrect heading, speed or position data can cause poor tracking. Scanner alignment and radar tuning should also be checked.
Check the monitor power, DVI/RGB cable, display-input selection and processor video output. Testing with a compatible monitor can help identify the faulty unit.
Marine radar equipment contains dangerous high voltage and emits strong radio-frequency energy. The radar must be isolated before opening the scanner, processor or transmitter section.
Many vessels still operate FAR-2805 and FAR-2807 series radars because they offer reliable performance, strong transmitter output and familiar bridge controls.
When an individual processor, monitor, control unit or scanner fails, a compatible tested replacement may allow the vessel to restore the existing system without immediately replacing all cabling, interfaces and bridge equipment.
However, model, processor version, transmitter power, radar band, scanner type and software compatibility must be verified before purchasing replacement parts.
