AIS Class A Transponder
Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC)
Refurbished
The JRC JHS-183 is a Class A shipborne Automatic Identification System designed for commercial vessels. It automatically transmits the vessel’s identity, position, course, speed and voyage-related information while receiving AIS information from other vessels and coast stations.
The photographed system includes the NCM-983 AIS Controller and NTE-183 AIS Transponder with VHF antenna. These two main components form the standard JHS-183 AIS installation.
The system assists bridge officers with vessel identification, collision-risk assessment and navigational decision-making. AIS should always be used together with radar, ECDIS, visual lookout and normal navigation procedures.

The detailed specification is available on the official JRC JHS-183 product page.
The NCM-983 is the bridge-mounted display and operating unit. It shows received AIS targets, target details, own-ship information, voyage data, messages and system alarms.
The controller uses a 4.5-inch display with selectable white or orange LED backlighting. Its illuminated keypad and adjustable dimmer make it suitable for both daytime and nighttime bridge operation.
The NTE-183 is the main transmitting and receiving unit. It communicates with other vessels and shore stations through dedicated AIS VHF frequencies.
The above-deck transponder and antenna design reduces cable requirements. A single coaxial connection of up to approximately 50 metres can connect the transponder to the controller.
The NQE-5183 provides additional interfaces for GPS, gyrocompass, speed log, radar, ECDIS, long-range communication and alarm systems.
The NBD-577C can provide AC/DC power conversion where the vessel does not have a suitable direct 24V DC supply.
The JHS-183 can receive and display information from up to 200 AIS targets. Operators can review vessel name, MMSI, call sign, position, course, speed and other transmitted data.
A guard zone can be configured around the vessel. When an AIS target enters the selected zone, the system provides a visual and audible warning.
Frequently monitored company or fleet vessels can be registered as own-group vessels, making them easier to recognize on the AIS display.
The system supports reception of AIS-SART signals. These emergency targets are prioritized on the target list to assist with search-and-rescue awareness.
The built-in self-diagnosis function continuously monitors important system conditions and helps technicians identify equipment or interface faults.
The JHS-183 can send received AIS target information to compatible radar and ECDIS equipment. It can also receive navigational information from GPS, gyrocompass and speed-log systems.
The system can automatically transmit:
Static and voyage information must be programmed correctly by an authorized technician or responsible vessel officer.
Check the NTE-183 transponder, VHF antenna, coaxial cable, connectors and power supply. Also verify whether the vessel is operating in an area with active AIS traffic.
Inspect the GPS input connection and confirm that valid position sentences are being received by the AIS controller.
Check the gyrocompass, speed-log and GPS interface wiring. Confirm that the correct NMEA/IEC input ports and data sentences have been selected.
Review the alarm message through the controller. Common causes include missing GPS data, antenna problems, transmitter faults, power-supply errors or incorrect external-sensor information.
Check the 24V DC supply, breaker, fuse, polarity and NCM-983 power cable. The system requires a stable input within its specified voltage range.
Static AIS data must be corrected using the proper service procedure. MMSI programming should not be changed without authorization.
Many commercial vessels continue to operate with the JHS-183 because of its reliable construction, compact design and integration with existing bridge equipment.
When a controller or transponder fails, installing a tested replacement component may be faster and more economical than changing the complete AIS system, cabling and bridge interfaces.
Compatibility, software version and serial-number range should always be checked before replacing individual components.
Depending on stock, support may be available for:
Yes. It is a Class A shipborne AIS designed primarily for commercial vessels.
The standard AIS controller is the JRC NCM-983.
The standard transponder is the JRC NTE-183.
The controller can display information for up to approximately 200 AIS targets.
Yes. The JHS-183 supports integration with compatible radar, ECDIS, GPS, gyrocompass and speed-log equipment.
Yes. The JHS-183 supports AIS-SART reception and prioritizes these emergency targets on the display.
Used, refurbished and reconditioned components may be available subject to stock, compatibility checking and operational testing.
JRC JHS-183 is a Class A Automatic Identification System consisting of the NCM-983 AIS controller and NTE-183 transponder. It supports up to 200 AIS targets, guard-zone alerts, AIS-SART reception and integration with radar, ECDIS, GPS and gyrocompass systems.
