Product Introduction

The JRCS SGD-640 LCD Graphic Terminal is the operator display used with the JRCS SMS-22 Alarm & Monitoring System (JMC-SMS-22) on board merchant ships. It is installed in the engine control room and, in many vessels, on the bridge or in engineers' accommodation, where it shows machinery alarm lists, graphic mimic pages, trend values and system status from the SMS-22 network.

SM MARINE SERVICE™ (https://www.smmarineservice.com/) supplies refurbished JRCS SGD-640 graphic terminals and related SMS-22 spare parts to ship owners, ship managers and repair yards worldwide. The SGD-640 family includes several versions – for example SGD-640-A, SGD-640-AF, SGD-640-AB, SGD-640-N2, SGD-640-N3, SGD-640-X3C, SGD-640-X4B and larger 15-inch versions such as SGD-640-X4G-2A – so please always send us your nameplate photo for an exact match.

What Is This Equipment?

The SGD-640 is a panel-mounted LCD graphic terminal. In the SMS-22 system, field signals (temperatures, pressures, levels, running/stop and alarm contacts) are collected by local units and the CTA unit, and the graphic terminal presents this information to the engineer. Through the terminal the duty engineer can see and acknowledge alarms, view group and point lists, and check analog values for the main engine, auxiliary engines, boilers, pumps, tanks and other machinery.

The SGD-640 series exists in different sizes and hardware revisions. The unit shown in our photographs is a compact black-housing terminal with the JRCS logo and red line on the front bezel, a protected front access cover and the "NK Type Approved No. 94A118 JMC-SMS-22" label. JRCS also produced larger SGD-640 versions with a 15-inch LCD for the same family of monitoring systems.

Main Features

  • Dedicated LCD graphic display for the JRCS SMS-22 alarm and monitoring system
  • Shows alarm lists, mimic graphics, measured values and system status

Inside the Unit: PCBs, Modules & Part Numbers

JRCS does not publish a public parts list for the SGD-640 graphic terminal, and no PCB numbers are visible in the supplied photographs. Based on the design of this type of terminal and on market listings, the following internal assemblies are present. Board codes below are given only where we found them in a source; everything else is marked "Not verified".

Main CPU / Controller Board

Runs the terminal software, draws the graphic pages and handles communication with the SMS-22 system. PCB number: Not verified.

Display Interface / LCD Driver Board

Drives the LCD panel and backlight. PCB number: Not verified.

Power Supply Unit (24V DC input)

Converts the 24V DC ship's supply to the internal voltages for the CPU and display. Several suppliers list the SGD-640-AF as "graphic terminal panel power supply DC24V 50W". PCB number: Not verified.

I/O and Communication Interface Board

Connects the MD (15-pin) and HC (9-pin) ports to the CPU. PCB number: Not verified.

LCD Panel and Backlight Inverter

The LCD module and its backlight (CCFL inverter on older versions). Panel part number: Not verified.

Memory / Program Card

The rear card slot is used for a program/memory card in this family. Related JRCS graphic memory card numbers found on the market are GDT-M302B-1 and GDT-M302B-2 (compatibility with SMS-22 SGD-640: Not verified).

Other Codes Seen on SGD-640 Units

The code SGD-ME-FL2 appears on several SGD-640 terminals offered on the market (exact function: Not verified). Some SGD-640-N2 units show the software label "SGD-640AF V1.1".

Tip: If one board in your terminal fails, send us a clear photo of the board label – SM MARINE SERVICE™ can check the exact PCB number against our stock in Bangladesh and China.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Blank or dark screen: check the 24V DC supply at the terminal block, the POWER switch and the 10A fuse. A dim but working screen often points to an aged backlight or inverter.
  • No communication / data not updating: check the MD/HC connectors and cables, and the status of the CTA unit and network.
  • Lines, spots or flicker on display: usually a failing LCD panel, display cable or driver board.
  • Unit restarts or freezes: check the supply voltage under load, cooling vents and the internal power supply unit.
  • Overheating: keep ventilation slots clean and free from dust.

Safety note: Always isolate the 24V DC supply before opening the unit or disconnecting cables. Inform the duty engineer, because the alarm display will be out of service. Work should be done by qualified personnel only, following the ship's procedures and the maker's documentation.

Common Alarms

Alarm codes and messages for the SGD-640 terminal are documented in the JRCS SMS-22 instruction manual for each ship. We do not publish undocumented alarm codes. Please check your vessel's manual or contact us with a photo of the message shown on screen.

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean the screen with a soft dry cloth – no solvents.
  • Keep ventilation openings clean; check for dust during regular maintenance.
  • Check tightness of the DC24V terminals and earth (FG/E) connections.
  • Check D-sub connectors (MD/HC) for loose screws and corrosion.
  • Keep a spare terminal or spare boards on board for older SMS-22 installations.

Why This Equipment Is Still Used

The JRCS SMS-22 system was installed on a large number of ships, and it still performs reliably. Replacing a full alarm and monitoring system means new cabling, software and class approval, which is expensive. Replacing only the failed SGD-640 graphic terminal with a compatible refurbished unit keeps the vessel running at much lower cost and with very short downtime.
