Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment (ODME) continuously measures the oil content (ppm) of water discharged from cargo tank areas, combines it with the discharge flow rate and ship speed, and calculates the instantaneous rate of discharge (litres per nautical mile) and the total quantity of oil discharged. If the legal limits are exceeded, the system stops the discharge by closing the overboard valve and raises an alarm. The MK III control unit is the operator station: it has an LCD display, a 16-key keypad (0–9, A–F), a STAND BY / MONITORING switch, an AUTO / MANU key switch, an alarm button, indicator LEDs and a built-in printer that prints the discharge record.
