The Woodward UG Governor is a self-contained hydraulic speed governor driven mechanically by the engine gear train.
Its purpose is to maintain a constant engine speed regardless of changing engine loads. As engine speed changes, an internal flyweight mechanism controls hydraulic oil flow, moving the power piston that adjusts the engine fuel rack until the preset speed is restored.
Unlike electronic governors, the UG Series operates entirely through precision mechanical and hydraulic components, making it highly dependable in harsh marine environments.

The governor is driven directly from the engine timing gear. Rotating flyweights sense engine speed and actuate the hydraulic pilot valve.
When engine load increases, speed decreases slightly. The governor responds immediately by directing hydraulic pressure to the power piston, increasing fuel delivery until the engine returns to the selected speed.
When load decreases, the reverse process occurs, reducing fuel and preventing engine overspeed.
