Oil Mist Detector

Imagine you are the duty engineer during a midnight watch. The main engine is running smoothly when the Slight Alarm lamp on the Oil Mist Detector suddenly illuminates.
At first glance it may appear to be a simple warning, but experienced Chief Engineers know that this could be the first indication of bearing overheating, poor lubrication, or abnormal friction inside the crankcase. Acting quickly at this stage may prevent catastrophic engine damage.
This is exactly why the Daihatsu MD-14M Oil Mist Detector has remained a trusted engine protection system on many commercial vessels for years. Its purpose is simple but vital—continuously monitor crankcase oil mist concentration and warn engineers before a dangerous condition develops.
The Daihatsu MD-14M is a marine Oil Mist Detection System (OMD) installed on diesel engines to monitor the concentration of oil mist inside the crankcase.
When abnormal oil mist is detected, the system immediately alerts engineers through visual alarms. This early warning gives the engine room team time to investigate the cause before severe bearing failure or crankcase explosion can occur.
Many older Daihatsu-powered vessels continue to rely on the MD-14M because of its dependable operation, simple maintenance, and long service life.
The detector continuously samples crankcase air and measures oil mist concentration.
During normal operation, the Normal indicator remains active. If oil mist concentration begins to rise, the Slight Alarm activates, allowing engineers to investigate. If the concentration continues increasing, the Final Alarm warns of a potentially dangerous condition requiring immediate action.
The front panel allows engineers to monitor:
