Salinometer
Alfa Lavel
New product
The Alfa Laval Salinometer DS-206 is a marine salinity level monitoring unit designed to measure and alarm the salt content of produced freshwater in shipboard freshwater generators, evaporators, condensate systems, and boiler feed water applications. In marine operation, correct salinity monitoring is essential because excessive salt contamination can damage boilers, reduce freshwater quality, create scaling, and increase corrosion risk.
The supplied DS-206 images show a professional Alfa Laval salinity monitoring panel with continuous salinity level display, salinity alarm level setting, test function, electrode or cable malfunction alarm, secondary alarm on/off function, rear wiring diagram, alarm relay terminals, electrode unit terminals, and 4-20 mA output terminals. This makes the DS-206 highly practical for marine engineers, ETOs, and technical superintendents who need clear operating indication and reliable alarm outputs.
Alfa Laval’s marine freshwater generation systems are designed to produce freshwater with very low salinity, and Alfa Laval states that its freshwater generation solutions can ensure freshwater quality below 2 ppm salinity. The salinometer plays a key role in protecting that water quality by continuously supervising the produced water and triggering alarm action when the salinity level exceeds the selected limit.
SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies Alfa Laval DS-206 Salinometers as New Equipment, Used Equipment, and Reconditioned Equipment depending on customer requirements and budget.

Alfa Laval Salinometer DS-206 Rear Wiring Diagram and Nameplate
The Alfa Laval DS-206 Salinometer works by receiving a signal from an electrode unit installed in the freshwater or distillate line. As salt content increases, the conductivity of the water changes. The salinometer interprets this conductivity signal and displays the salinity level in ppm seasalt. If the measured salinity exceeds the preset alarm level, the unit activates alarm outputs so engineers can take immediate corrective action.
The front panel is divided into clear operating zones. One area shows continuously measured salinity level in ppm seasalt. Another area allows the operator to set the salinity alarm level. The test function allows crew to perform a test at a preset 10 ppm level, while the alarm section indicates malfunction of the electrode or cable and preset alarm level exceeded. This layout is easy to understand during daily engine room operation.
On the rear side, the unit label shows the terminal arrangement for mains supply, alarm relay A, alarm relay B, electrode unit wiring, and 4-20 mA signal output. The rear label also identifies the unit as Salinometer DS-206, Version 1A, Item 98525656-01, with a visible serial number.

Alfa Laval freshwater generator documentation for DS-series salinometers describes salinity measurement of produced distillate with adjustable alarm functions, installation requirements, testing, and electrode maintenance. Alfa Laval also recommends cleaning freshwater generator salinometer electrodes regularly as part of good maintenance practice.
Alfa Laval DS-206 Product Label, Item Number and Wiring Diagram
The Alfa Laval DS-206 is designed for reliable salinity monitoring in marine freshwater generation and water quality systems. Its design is practical for shipboard operators because it provides simple status indication, easy alarm adjustment, and clear test functions.
Key features include:
The DS-206 is especially useful for vessels where engineers need both local display and alarm relay integration with engine room alarm systems or integrated automation systems.
Alfa Laval DS-206 Operator Front View
The Alfa Laval DS-206 Salinometer is used wherever salinity monitoring is required to protect marine water systems. The most common application is freshwater generator distillate monitoring, where the unit checks whether produced freshwater is acceptable for storage, boiler feed, or general ship use.
Typical marine applications include:
Vessel types using salinometers include container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, chemical tankers, LNG carriers, LPG carriers, passenger vessels, offshore supply vessels, FPSO units, naval vessels, and research ships.

Salinometer faults can interrupt freshwater generator operation and create uncertainty about water quality. Common issues include unstable reading, no display, wrong salinity indication, defective electrode, cable fault, alarm relay failure, false alarm, alarm not activating, and dirty conductivity sensor.
SM MARINE SERVICE™ provides technical support for:
General salinometer troubleshooting references note that correct measurement depends on electrode condition, cable condition, and cleanliness of the electrode surface.

The Alfa Laval DS-206 is used for continuous salinity level monitoring in marine freshwater generators, evaporators, condensate systems, and boiler feed water applications.
PPM seasalt indicates the measured salt concentration level in the water. This helps engineers decide whether produced freshwater is acceptable or whether alarm action is required.
The electrode unit senses conductivity changes in the water. Higher salt content increases conductivity, allowing the salinometer to detect salinity level.
The supplied unit shows alarm indications for electrode or cable malfunction and preset alarm level exceeded. The rear wiring diagram also shows Alarm Relay A and Alarm Relay B terminals.
