The Graviner MK7 Oil Mist Detector (OMD) is the latest generation crankcase oil mist monitoring and protection system developed by Kidde Graviner for marine diesel engines. The system continuously monitors oil mist concentrations inside engine crankcases and provides early warning of abnormal operating conditions that may lead to severe engine damage or crankcase explosions. The MK7 was developed as a next-generation solution featuring digital communication, advanced diagnostics, touch-screen operation, and simplified installation compared with earlier OMD generations.
The images provided show a complete Graviner MK7 system consisting of:
The MK7 system is designed for both two-stroke and four-stroke marine diesel engines and is widely installed on commercial vessels, offshore platforms, power generation plants, and industrial engine installations.
Oil mist detection is one of the most important safety functions on large diesel engines. Early detection of oil mist caused by overheating bearings, piston damage, crankshaft defects, or lubrication failures allows engineers to take corrective action before catastrophic engine damage occurs.
The Graviner MK7 is an intelligent auto-addressed oil mist detection system that continuously measures oil mist density within individual crankcase compartments.
Unlike older oil mist detector systems that required centralized sampling pipes, the MK7 uses individual detector heads mounted directly on crankcase locations. Each detector independently measures oil mist concentration and communicates digitally with the engine-mounted control unit. This design significantly reduces installation complexity and maintenance requirements.
The system architecture includes:
The Remote Display Unit shown in the image uses a color touch-screen interface that allows engineers to monitor oil mist levels, detector status, alarms, historical events, and diagnostic information without entering machinery spaces during alarm conditions.
A complete MK7 installation can monitor up to 100 detector heads across up to 10 engines, making it suitable for vessels with multiple propulsion and auxiliary engines.
Each detector is automatically identified by the control system, simplifying installation, commissioning, and maintenance procedures.
Detector heads are mounted directly on crankcase compartments, eliminating traditional sample pipe systems and reducing maintenance costs.
The MK7 system can support up to 10 detector heads per control unit and up to 10 control units per integrated system, enabling monitoring of large engine installations.
The Remote Display Unit provides a modern touch-screen interface for system monitoring, diagnostics, and maintenance activities.
The system uses advanced optical measurement techniques to determine oil mist density and provide highly reliable early warning of developing engine faults.
The MK7 continuously monitors detector outputs and immediately activates alarms when oil mist concentrations exceed preset limits.
Built-in diagnostics simplify fault finding, maintenance planning, and system health monitoring.
