The Graviner Mark 6 Oil Mist Detector (OMD) is one of the most widely recognized crankcase protection systems used onboard commercial vessels worldwide. Developed by Kidde Graviner, the Mark 6 OMD continuously monitors oil mist concentration inside diesel engine crankcases and provides early warning of abnormal operating conditions that may lead to serious machinery damage or crankcase explosions.
Oil mist is generated naturally within diesel engine crankcases. Under normal operating conditions, oil vapor generation and condensation remain balanced. However, when a bearing begins overheating, piston seizure develops, or another mechanical fault creates a hotspot, oil mist levels increase rapidly. If not detected early, this condition may result in an explosion inside the crankcase. The Mark 6 OMD is specifically designed to identify these dangerous conditions before they become critical.
The Graviner Mark 6 introduced a modern detector-based architecture that eliminates traditional sample piping systems, reducing installation complexity while improving monitoring speed and reliability. The system is approved and installed on thousands of vessels including container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, offshore vessels, and power generation installations.
The Graviner Mark 6 OMD is an analogue addressable oil mist detection system designed to monitor diesel engine crankcases without the need for external sampling pipes. Each detector head is mounted directly on the engine crankcase and independently measures oil mist density. The measured data is transmitted digitally to the control unit for continuous analysis and alarm management.

The detector uses optical light-scattering technology. Oil mist particles scatter a controlled light beam, and the detector electronics calculate the oil mist density. If alarm thresholds are exceeded, the control unit activates visual alarms, audible alarms, and engine protection outputs.
Each detector head is mounted directly on the crankcase, eliminating the need for sample pipes and associated maintenance requirements.
A single Mark 6 control unit can supervise up to eight engines and sixty-four detector heads simultaneously.
The system can scan a complete 64-detector installation in approximately 1.2 seconds, providing rapid response to developing engine faults.
The Mark 6 utilizes light scattering measurement principles that provide high sensitivity while maintaining strong resistance to false alarms.
Each detector head operates independently and can be identified, monitored, isolated, and replaced without affecting the remaining detectors on the system.
The system provides early warning of overheating bearings, piston failures, crankshaft problems, and other developing mechanical faults before catastrophic failure occurs.
