Product Introduction

The Tokyo Keiki HB-165A-S is a 165 mm liquid-filled magnetic compass bowl from Tokyo Keiki Inc., Japan. It is the heart of the ship's standard or steering magnetic compass, the mandatory backup heading reference on every SOLAS vessel. SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies refurbished Tokyo Keiki compass bowls and magnetic compass spare parts to ship owners, ship managers and service companies worldwide. Visit https://www.smmarineservice.com/ for more navigation and communication equipment.

What Is This Equipment?

A magnetic compass bowl contains a floating compass card with magnets, immersed in damping liquid and mounted in gimbals. It is installed in the binnacle (compass stand) on the compass deck. The card image is shown to the helmsman through a reflector tube, or the heading is transmitted electrically to a remote display. Because it needs no power to show heading, the magnetic compass remains a SOLAS requirement even on ships with gyro compasses.

Main Features

  • 165 mm compass card with clear 0–360° graduation
  • Liquid-filled bowl for stable, damped card movement
  • Gimbal mounting for use in rough seas
  • Card illumination for night use
  • Compatible with Tokyo Keiki SH-165A series binnacles
  • Japanese Government type approval No. 4294
  • Made in Japan

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Air bubble in the bowl: liquid loss through a seal; the bowl needs refilling and resealing.
  • Card sticking or slow: pivot or jewel wear, or damaged card; workshop overhaul required.
  • Discoloured liquid or card: aging of liquid or contamination; refurbishment required.
  • Large deviation: check nearby magnetic material and electrical cables, then readjust correctors.
  • No card illumination: check the lamp, socket and 24 V supply.

Safety note: keep magnets, tools and electrical cables away from the compass. Do not open the bowl on board; refilling and repair must be done by a qualified compass workshop, followed by compass adjustment.

Maintenance Tips

  • Check daily for bubbles and smooth card movement
  • Keep the bowl glass and reflector optics clean
  • Check gimbal movement and lighting regularly
  • Keep the deviation card updated and adjust the compass when required
  • Protect the binnacle from direct sun and water ingress

FAQ

What is the Tokyo Keiki HB-165A-S?

It is a 165 mm magnetic compass bowl made by Tokyo Keiki Inc., Japan, used in the SH-165A series standard / steering magnetic compass systems.
