What Is This Equipment?

A Voyage Data Recorder is the "black box" of a ship, required under SOLAS Chapter V. In the VR-5000 system the VR-5010 Data Collecting Unit (DCU) receives data from GPS, gyro compass, speed log, echo sounder, AIS, radar, alarms, microphones and VHF. It processes and stores the data and passes it to the VR-5020 Data Recording Unit, a fire- and impact-protected capsule mounted on deck. The DCU contains three main sections: the Data Processor Unit (DPU), the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) and the Junction Box (JB).

Main Features

  • Records navigation sensor data, bridge audio, VHF communication and radar images
  • Up to 6 bridge microphones and 2 VHF audio channels
  • IEC 61162 (NMEA) serial, analog and digital inputs for ship sensors and alarms
  • Radar video recording via frame grabber
  • Protective capsule with flash memory, built for fire, shock and deep-sea immersion
  • Underwater acoustic beacon for capsule location
  • Internal backup batteries keep bridge audio recording for about 2 hours after power loss
  • Remote alarm panel on the bridge with NORMAL, ERROR and SAVE indication
  • Removable 40 GB hard disk for long-term data

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • DRU (capsule) failure or disconnection: check the IEEE 1394 cable and connectors between DCU and capsule, and the DRU IF board IOI-1394LPA.
  • Serial data timeout: check the sensor NMEA/RS-422 wiring and the RS-422 IF board.
  • Microphone test failed: check microphone cables, the junction box terminals and the audio analog board.
  • Radar picture not recorded: check the radar video cable and the frame grabber board.
  • Running on battery: check the ship's AC supply, breakers and the PDU AC/DC converter.
  • Clock keeps drifting: replace the CR2032 battery on the processor board.
  • Remote alarm panel missing: check RAP cable and connection.

Safety note: the DCU contains high voltage. Switch off AC, DC and battery breakers before opening. Work should be carried out only by a qualified VDR service engineer. The VDR must pass its annual performance test after repair.

Common Alarms

The Furuno operator's manual documents DCU status and error codes, for example: DCU OK (253), Fatal failure (170), DRU failure (010), DRU disconnected over 90 s (022), Backup device failure (014), Frame grabber failure (042), DATAIO failure (130), Serial timeout (301–316), Running on battery (214), Microphone test failed (218), RAP missing (082), PDU connection lost (246), UTC timeout (234), Self-test failed (254). The Remote Alarm Panel shows NORMAL (green), ERROR (red) and SAVE (yellow).

Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect cables and connections regularly for chafing and loose terminals
  • Replace the VR-5015 backup batteries every four years
  • Replace the acoustic beacon before its expiry date
  • Replace the CR2032 clock battery if the time needs frequent adjustment
  • Keep the DPU cooling fans and filters clean
  • Carry out the annual VDR performance test (APT) as required by flag and class

Why This Equipment Is Still Used

Many vessels were fitted with the Furuno VR-5000 during the first SOLAS VDR installations. Replacing a complete VDR means new cabling, installation and survey work, so owners often keep the existing system running with refurbished units and replacement boards, as long as the VDR passes its annual performance test.
