The Headway HMT-100A Voyage Data Recorder is a marine VDR made by Headway Technology Co., Ltd. of Qingdao, China. It records the vessel's navigation data, radar images, bridge voice and VHF audio so that the last hours before an incident can be recovered for investigation. What Is This Equipment?

A Voyage Data Recorder is the "black box" of a ship. The HMT-100A collects data from the GPS, gyro compass, speed log, echo sounder, AIS, autopilot, engine telegraph and alarm systems through IEC 61162 inputs, records radar screen images, and records sound from microphones on the bridge and bridge wings plus VHF radio audio. The most recent data is stored in a protected data capsule, built to survive fire, impact and deep-sea pressure, while longer history is stored in the main cabinet unit.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

• VDR alarm on remote panel: read the message on the panel and check the matching sensor input, microphone or capsule connection.
• Microphone test failure: check microphone cables and connectors; exterior microphones often suffer from water and corrosion.
• Capsule fault: check the capsule cable and connector; the capsule must not be opened on board.
• No sensor data: check the IEC 61162 cable and the output of the GPS, gyro, AIS or other source.
• No radar image: check the VGA cable and radar video output.
• Power or battery alarm: check main AC and 24V DC supply and the condition of the backup battery.

Safety note: Switch off and isolate power before opening the main cabinet or disconnecting cables. Do not open or tamper with the data capsule. Any work affecting VDR performance should be followed by checks required by the flag state and the annual performance test, carried out by authorized service personnel.
