Product Introduction

A rudder angle indicator shows the actual position of the ship's rudder to the officer on watch, the helmsman and the pilot. The units shown here are a C.Plath rudder angle indicator and an Anschütz rudder angle indicator, both with a 40° port – 0 – 40° starboard scale for panel mounting in the wheelhouse, bridge wings or steering gear room.

SM MARINE SERVICE™ (https://www.smmarineservice.com/) supplies rudder angle indicators of many brands, sizes and ranges, together with RPM indicators, pitch indicators and other bridge instruments, to ships worldwide.

What Is This Equipment?

The rudder angle indicator is part of the ship's steering system. A rudder angle transmitter (feedback unit) on the rudder stock sends a signal to one or more indicators. The pointer shows how many degrees the rudder is turned to port or starboard.

C.Plath unit: square analog indicator with "Rudder Angle Degrees" dial, scale marked every degree with figures at 10, 20, 30 and 40 to Port and Stb.

Anschütz unit: square analog indicator with "Degree Rudder Angle" dial and Anschütz logo, figures at 20 and 40 PORT / STBD, red sector for port and green sector for starboard. Anschütz rudder angle indicators are offered in 96 x 96, 144 x 144 and 192 x 192 mm sizes with 45° or 75° display ranges.

Main Features

  • Clear analog display of rudder position, port and starboard
  • 40-0-40 degree scale on the supplied units
  • Red / green port and starboard colour coding (Anschütz)
  • Square panel-mount housings for console installation
  • Illuminated dial for night use (dimmer controlled on the bridge)
  • Other brands, ranges and sizes available on request

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Pointer does not move: check power supply, signal cable and rudder angle transmitter.
  • Wrong reading / offset at midship: zero and span adjustment of the transmitter or calibration box needed.
  • Pointer jumping: loose connection, worn transmitter potentiometer or interference.
  • Dial not illuminated: check lamp / LED and dimmer circuit.
  • Indicators show different values: recalibrate each indicator against the actual rudder position.

Safety notes: isolate power before working on the indicator. Rudder movement tests must be coordinated between the bridge and steering gear room following the ship's procedures.

Maintenance Tips

  • Compare bridge indicators with the mechanical rudder scale during steering gear tests.
  • Check cable terminals and connectors for corrosion.
  • Keep the front glass clean; check illumination.
  • Note the input signal and range before ordering a replacement.
