Product Introduction

The SKIPPER GDS101 is a professional navigation echo sounder for merchant ships, built by SKIPPER Electronics AS in Norway. It measures and displays the water depth under the keel on a 10.4" colour TFT display, records depth history and gives shallow and deep water alarms – essential for safe navigation in coastal waters, port approaches and under-keel clearance (UKC) management.

The photographed unit is the single-channel version, part number EN101C-SA, with front keys including Draught Correction, ON/OFF1, OFF2, dimmer and settings, and a rotary control knob. SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies refurbished SKIPPER echo sounders and spare parts to ships worldwide – send your inquiry through https://www.smmarineservice.com/.

What Is the SKIPPER GDS101 Echo Sounder?

An echo sounder sends short acoustic pulses from a transducer mounted in the ship’s hull and measures the time until the echo returns from the seabed. The GDS101 converts this into water depth, shows a scrolling echogram and digital depth, and sends depth data to the ECDIS, VDR and other bridge systems through NMEA 0183.

SOLAS requires an approved echo sounder on most ships. The GDS101 stores depth, time and position data, so the record of the last 24 hours (and longer on its memory card) is available for review and voyage data recording.

Main Features

  • 10.4" colour TFT display with full dimming and day/night presets.
  • Single channel – 38, 50 or 200 kHz selectable for one transducer.
  • Depth range 0–10 m up to 0–1600 m, accuracy better than 1%.
  • Draught correction key – display depth below keel or below surface.
  • Shallow and deep water alarms with alarm relays to the ship’s alarm system.
  • History storage – 24 h continuous depth/time/position log, Compact Flash memory.
  • NMEA 0183 input (speed, position, heading, time) and output; 4–20 mA and 0–10 V depth outputs.
  • Dual power supply – 115/230 V AC and 20–32 V DC.

Marine & Industrial Applications

  • SOLAS navigation echo sounder on bulk carriers, tankers, container ships and general cargo vessels.
  • Under-keel clearance (UKC) monitoring in ports, channels and shallow waters.
  • Depth input to ECDIS, VDR and integrated bridge systems.
  • Offshore, research, fishing and government vessels.

Skipper GDS101 echo sounder label EN101C-SA S115174 Made in Norway
Original label: SKIPPER GDS101 TFT single channel, P.no EN101C-SA, S/N S115174, SW 05.06.01, 20–32 V DC / 115/230 V AC.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • No depth / lost bottom – wrong frequency or range, air under the transducer, damaged transducer or cable, transducer fouled by marine growth.
  • Unstable or false depth – interference from other sounders, aeration in heavy weather, low gain settings.
  • Blank or dark display – dimmer setting, backlight or display fault, power supply problem.
  • No depth on ECDIS/VDR – NMEA output settings or cable fault.
  • Depth alarm not working – check alarm limits and relay wiring.

Safety: never transmit with the transducer out of water during dry-dock. Isolate AC and DC supplies before opening the unit.

Maintenance Tips

  • Check the transducer and tank during every dry-docking; do not paint the transducer face with standard antifouling.
  • Set the draught correction correctly after loading changes.
  • Keep the display clean and check dimming before night watches.
  • Set shallow-water alarm according to the company’s UKC requirements.
  • Back up settings and keep the software version recorded.

Spare Parts & Replacement Availability

SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies SKIPPER GDS101 echo sounders, transducers and spare parts to ships worldwide. Depending on availability, we can offer refurbished, used, reconditioned or new units.

For an accurate quotation please send:

  • Photo of the unit label (part number, e.g. EN101C-SA, and serial number)

  • Quantity, vessel name / IMO and delivery port

Availability and condition are confirmed with the quotation. Contact us via www.smmarineservice.com.

Why the GDS101 Is Still Used

The GDS101 is installed on many vessels with matching transducers, cabling and interfaces to ECDIS and VDR. Replacing a faulty display unit with the same EN101C-SA keeps the transducer, panel cut-out, wiring and approvals unchanged, avoiding dry-docking or a complete new echo sounder installation.
