Product Introduction

The Woodward UG-8 Dial Governor is one of the most widely used hydraulic-mechanical speed governors in the marine world. For decades it has controlled the speed of auxiliary diesel generator engines, small propulsion engines, pumps and compressors on ships of every type – and thousands of them are still running today.

Built by Woodward, the UG-8 combines its own oil pump, flyweight ballhead and power piston in one compact case, and offers simple front-panel dials for speed setting, droop and load limit. SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies refurbished UG-8 governors and governor spare parts to ship owners and engine workshops worldwide – send your inquiry through https://www.smmarineservice.com/.

What Is the Woodward UG-8 Governor?

A governor keeps an engine running at the required speed regardless of load. The UG-8 is driven by the engine; flyweights in its ballhead sense speed, and a pilot valve directs pressurised oil to a power piston that turns the terminal (output) shaft. The terminal shaft is linked to the fuel racks, so the governor increases or decreases fuel as load changes.

The “Dial” version is set from the front panel: the Speed Setting knob sets engine speed, Speed Droop allows load sharing between paralleled generators, and Load Limit restricts maximum fuel – turning it to zero shuts the engine down. A compensation needle valve and pointer adjust stability. Optional remote speed setting motors and shutdown solenoids allow control from the switchboard or alarm system.

Main Features

  • Self-contained hydraulics – own oil sump (approx. two quarts, filled to the sight-glass mark) and gear pump.
  • Front-panel dials – speed setting, speed droop, load limit and speed setting indicator.
  • Isochronous or droop operation – zero droop for single units, droop for parallel generator operation.
  • Load limit with shutdown – turning load limit to zero stops the prime mover.
  • Remote speed setting – via synchronizer / speed adjusting motor (fitted on the photographed units).
  • Shutdown solenoid option for remote or safety shutdown (fitted on the photographed units).
  • Clockwise or counter-clockwise drive.

Inside the Unit: Modules, Accessories & Part References

The UG-8 is a hydraulic-mechanical governor, so it contains no electronic PCB. Buyers usually search for the following internal assemblies and accessories:

Ballhead and Flyweights

The speed-sensing assembly; available with different natural frequencies to suit the engine.

Pilot Valve Plunger and Bushing

Directs oil to or from the power piston according to the flyweight position.

Power Piston and Terminal Shaft

Converts oil pressure into rotation of the output (terminal) shaft connected to the fuel linkage.

Oil Pump, Accumulators and Relief Valve

Internal gear pump and accumulators that maintain the governor’s working oil pressure.

Compensation System – Dashpots and Needle Valve

Large and small dashpot pistons, floating lever and needle valve that give stable speed control after load changes.

Speed Setting, Droop and Load Limit Mechanisms

The dial-operated mechanisms behind the front panel knobs.

Speed Setting Motor (Synchronizer Motor / PM Speed Adjusting Motor)

Electric motor mounted on the governor cover for remote raise/lower of engine speed (Woodward manual 03035).

Shutdown Solenoid

Electrical shutdown device on the cover, energise- or de-energise-to-shutdown (Woodward manual 03013).

Other Options

Low lube oil pressure shutdown (manual 03016), magnetic speed pickup (manual 36052), micro switches and wiring harness, and booster servomotor for quick starts (manual 36684).

Main Components & Related Units

  • Woodward UG-8 Lever governor – lever-operated version of the UG-8
  • Woodward UG-8 MAS – UG-8 with milliamp (4–20 mA) speed setting and driver box
  • Woodward UG-40 – larger UG governor (higher work output)
  • Drive shafts, base assemblies and linkage for the engine

Marine & Industrial Applications

  • Auxiliary diesel generator engines on ships (main application).
  • Small and medium propulsion and harbour-craft engines.
  • Emergency generators, fire pumps and compressors.
  • Land-based gensets, pumps and small steam/gas turbines.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Hunting (speed oscillation) – incorrect compensation needle valve setting, air in the oil, dirty or wrong oil, or worn linkage.
  • Slow response to load changes – needle valve too far open/closed, low oil level or worn pump.
  • Engine will not reach rated speed – load limit set too low, speed setting at minimum, or fuel linkage restriction.
  • Poor load sharing – droop settings not matched between paralleled generators.
  • Remote speed control not working – speed setting motor or wiring fault.
  • Engine does not stop on command – shutdown solenoid or linkage fault; check immediately.
  • Oil leakage – worn shaft seals or gaskets.

Safety: always have an independent overspeed trip on the engine. Never adjust linkage with the engine running unless following the manufacturer’s procedure, and keep hands clear of moving fuel linkage.

Maintenance Tips

  • Keep the oil level at the sight-glass mark and change the oil regularly with the grade recommended by Woodward.
  • Flush the governor if the oil is dirty or after repairs.
  • Re-adjust compensation after oil change or overhaul.
  • Check linkage for wear and free movement without backlash.
  • Test shutdown solenoid and load-limit shutdown periodically.
  • Send the governor for overhaul and test-bench calibration at the recommended interval.

Why the UG-8 Is Still Used

The UG-8 is simple, robust and works without electronics, which makes it ideal for engine rooms. Many generator engines were designed around the UG-8 drive, mounting and linkage, so replacing a worn governor with the same type keeps the engine set-up, load sharing and approvals unchanged – the quickest and most economical way to restore reliable speed control.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Woodward UG-8 Dial Governor?

A hydraulic-mechanical speed governor with front-panel dials, used mainly on diesel generator engines.

What is the work output of the UG-8?

13.2 N·m (9.7 lb-ft) according to Woodward manual 03040.

What drive speed does it need?

Recommended 1000–1500 rpm, maximum 1500 rpm continuous.

Does the UG-8 have a PCB?

No. It is fully hydraulic-mechanical. Optional accessories such as speed setting motors and solenoids are electrical.

What is the difference between UG-8 Dial and UG-8 Lever?

The Dial version is set by front-panel knobs; the Lever version uses an external lever for speed setting.

Can I operate generators in parallel with the UG-8?

Yes, by using speed droop. Isochronous (zero droop) is for single-unit operation.

What oil does the UG-8 use?

Use the oil grade recommended in the Woodward manual for your operating temperature; fill to the sight-glass mark.

Why does my engine hunt with the UG-8?

Most often due to incorrect compensation needle valve setting, air or dirt in the oil, or worn linkage.

Can you supply the speed setting motor or shutdown solenoid separately?

Yes, subject to availability. Please send the nameplate photo and voltage.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes, SM MARINE SERVICE™ arranges worldwide shipping to vessels and ports.
