The Yokogawa CMZ900 master compass (MKM026) is the main unit of the CMZ900 series marine gyrocompass, one of the most widely installed gyro systems on merchant ships. It houses the MKT007 gyrosphere, the follow-up mechanism and the main electronics, and – on stand-alone versions – carries its own operation panel with a digital gyro heading display and power switch on the front.
Today the CMZ900 range is produced by YDK Technologies, the company formerly known as Yokogawa Denshikiki. Because the master compass is the heart of the heading system, a failure here affects the autopilot, radar, ECDIS, AIS and every repeater on the bridge. A gyrocompass finds geographic (true) north using a fast-spinning gyroscope that is influenced by the Earth’s rotation and gravity. In the CMZ900, the gyroscope is sealed inside the MKT007 gyrosphere, which floats in supporting liquid inside the master compass. The master compass electronics follow the sphere’s position, apply speed and latitude correction and generate the heading signal.
That heading is sent to repeater compasses, autopilot, radar, ECDIS, AIS, VDR and other bridge equipment through serial (IEC 61162), stepper and analog outputs. On the CMZ900S/D, a separate MKC326 control box provides additional outputs and system control; on the CMZ900B the master compass with its operation unit can work as a compact stand-alone system.
