Product Introduction

The Terasaki AH-50C is a heavy-duty, high-capacity air circuit breaker built for the main switchboards of ships and large industrial plants. With a nameplate rating of 5000 A, an interrupting capacity of up to 120 kA and Lloyd’s Register (LR) marking, it is the type of breaker used to connect main generators and protect the main bus bars of a vessel’s electrical system.

Terasaki Electric of Japan is one of the best-known names in marine switchgear, and AH-series breakers are still installed on many vessels built in the 1990s and 2000s. When one of these breakers fails, owners need an exact-match replacement that fits the existing cradle, bus-bar connections and control wiring. SM MARINE SERVICE™ supplies the AH-50C and related Terasaki ACB spare parts to ships worldwide – send your inquiry through https://www.smmarineservice.com/.

What Is the Terasaki AH-50C Air Circuit Breaker?

An air circuit breaker (ACB) is a low-voltage power breaker that interrupts current in open air, using arc chutes to extinguish the arc when its main contacts separate. On board ship, ACBs are the main protective devices between the generators and the main switchboard, and on large feeders such as bow thrusters, cargo pumps or shore connection.

The AH-50C combines a spring-operated closing mechanism, heavy main contacts and arc chutes with a front-panel over-current trip unit. The trip unit monitors current through the breaker’s current transformers (CT ratio 5000:3 on the nameplate) and opens the breaker automatically on overload or short circuit, protecting generators, cables and bus bars. Operating instructions and connecting diagrams are stored behind the rating nameplate, as marked on the unit.

Main Features

  • 5000 A frame – for main generator and bus-tie duty on large vessels.
  • High breaking capacity – 100 kA at AC 550 V and 120 kA at 460 V / 220 V (with instantaneous trip).
  • 100 kA short-time withstand for 1 second – supports selective (discriminating) protection.
  • Adjustable over-current trip unit – dial settings for long-time, short-time and instantaneous protection, with test terminals.
  • Manual charging handle with ON/OFF indication and push-to-close / push-to-open buttons.
  • Classification marking – LR on the nameplate for marine service.

Inside the Unit: Trip Unit, Boards & Part Numbers

Buyers often search for an individual module when only one part of the breaker has failed. The main assemblies of the AH-50C are:

Over-Current Trip (OCR) Unit

The electronic over-current release on the upper front panel, with adjustable dials for pick-up and time settings, alarm/trip contacts and test terminals. Its internal electronic board carries the protection logic. The exact trip-unit type number is not clearly visible in the supplied photograph. Terasaki over-current trips of this generation are often found with designations such as AOR-1L; compatibility with the AH-50C must be checked against the unit’s label.

Current Transformers (CT 5000:3)

Built-in CTs that feed the trip unit with a signal proportional to the main current.

Under-Voltage Trip (UVT) and Shunt Trip

Optional coils that open the breaker on loss of voltage or on a remote trip command. Terasaki UVT devices such as the AUT-1BDR are used on breakers of this family – fitment not verified.

Closing Coil, Charging Motor and Spring Mechanism

The stored-energy mechanism that closes the breaker; motor charging is used where remote closing (e.g. auto-synchronising) is required.

Auxiliary Switches

Signal contacts for breaker position to the switchboard and power management system (an “Auxiliary Switch (Option) Connection” label is fitted on the unit).

Main Contacts, Arc Chutes and Draw-Out Cradle

The current-carrying and arc-extinguishing parts, plus the cradle and primary disconnects that connect the breaker to the bus bars.

Related Terasaki ACB Models

The AH-50C belongs to the Terasaki AT/AH ACB family, which also includes models such as AH-40C, AH-60C, AT20L and AT25L. SM MARINE SERVICE™ can also assist with these and with current Terasaki ACB ranges.

Marine & Industrial Applications

  • Main generator breakers (ACB) in the ship’s main switchboard.
  • Bus-tie breakers between switchboard sections.
  • Large feeders: bow thrusters, cargo pumps, compressors and shore connection.
  • Main incomers in power plants, factories and offshore installations.

Common Problems & Troubleshooting

  • Breaker will not close – spring not charged, closing coil or UVT not energised, mechanical interlock or draw-out position not correct.
  • Spring will not charge – charging motor, limit switch or control supply fault; worn mechanism.
  • Nuisance tripping – incorrect over-current trip settings, faulty trip-unit board, loose CT wiring or genuine overload.
  • Breaker does not trip in test – trip-unit or trip-coil failure; always investigate immediately.
  • Overheating of terminals – loose bus-bar connections, worn contacts or poor primary disconnect contact.
  • Wrong position signal – auxiliary switch or wiring fault affecting the power management system.

Safety: an ACB of this size controls very high fault energy. Work only with the generator stopped, the breaker drawn out and isolated, springs discharged and under a permit-to-work system, following Terasaki procedures and class requirements.

Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect and clean arc chutes and main contacts; check contact wear.
  • Lubricate the mechanism with the grease specified by the manufacturer.
  • Check tightness of bus-bar and primary disconnect connections.
  • Carry out over-current trip tests (secondary injection) and record results.
  • Test UVT, shunt trip and closing operations, and verify auxiliary contact signals.
  • Keep the switchboard dry and dust-free.

Why the AH-50C Is Still in Use

Main switchboard breakers are built into the switchboard: the cradle, bus bars, control wiring and protection settings are all designed around the original type. Replacing a single AH-50C with the same model avoids modifying the switchboard, re-engineering protection and new class approval – which makes an exact replacement the fastest and most economical way to return a vessel’s power plant to full service.
