The YDK MKT007 gyrosphere is the heart of the Yokogawa CMZ900 series marine gyro compass. A gyro compass does not rely on the Earth’s magnetic field. Instead, a fast-spinning gyroscope, influenced by the Earth’s rotation and gravity, settles with its spin axis pointing to geographic (true) north. In the CMZ900 system this gyroscope is enclosed in the MKT007 gyrosphere, which floats in a supporting liquid inside the master compass container.
The master compass follows the gyrosphere’s north-seeking movement and converts it into heading data. That data is distributed through the control box and junction box to bridge equipment as digital serial (IEC 61162) signals and to repeater compasses. If the gyrosphere fails or degrades, the whole heading system – and every navigation instrument depending on it – is affected, which is why this part is critical for safe navigation.
