Honeywell HERMetic UTImeter Gtex N Series
Honeywell / Honeywell Tanksystem
Refurbished
The Honeywell HERMetic UTImeter Gtex N Series is a portable, gas-tight electronic gauging instrument designed for closed measurement of hydrocarbons and chemicals stored in ship cargo tanks.
It is not only a level meter. In one portable instrument, the operator can measure:
Ullage Level • Cargo Temperature • Oil-Water Interface
Honeywell specifically describes the Gtex N Series as equipment for cargo control measurement, custody-transfer verification, temperature checking and detection of free water in marine cargo tanks.
Manufacturer: Honeywell / Honeywell Tanksystem
Product Family: HERMetic
Model: UTImeter Gtex / Gtex N Series
Product Type: Portable Gas-Tight Electronic Tank Gauging Device
Main Measurements: Ullage, Temperature, Oil-Water Interface
Application: Marine Cargo Tanks / Shore Storage Tanks

Hazardous Area Application: Intrinsically safe versions approved for hazardous tank environments
In a cargo tank, ullage means the distance from the tank's reference point down to the liquid surface.
So, instead of simply saying “how much oil is inside the tank,” the instrument measures the empty space above the cargo. Using the vessel's tank calibration tables, the crew can then determine the quantity or volume of cargo.
The HERMetic UTImeter can also detect the liquid surface, read cargo temperature and identify the oil-water interface near the bottom of the tank.
The graduated tape is lowered through the tank's vapor-control valve. When the probe reaches the liquid surface, the unit provides an alarm indication and the operator reads the tape at the reference point.
The sensing probe includes an RTD temperature element. Honeywell states that the sensor is factory calibrated and stores its temperature characteristics, so replacement of a sensor or tape does not normally require full recalibration of the instrument.
When the probe moves from hydrocarbon into water, the instrument changes its audible indication, enabling the operator to detect free water at the bottom of the cargo tank.
The portable Gtex is connected to a permanently installed HERMetic vapour-control valve on the tank.
The valve is opened and the graduated tape with sensing probe is lowered into the tank.
Honeywell's operating description explains the audible signals in simple terms:
Probe in vapor/air: intermittent signal
Probe touches oil/product: continuous signal
Probe reaches water interface: faster intermittent signal
The level itself is read from the graduated tape through the instrument's viewing window.
This closed-gauging design helps reduce direct exposure of the operator to cargo vapors.
The Gtex N family is available in several versions for different cargo requirements.
Standard configuration with a 1-inch sensing probe and FKM seals for common hydrocarbon applications.
Chemical-resistant version using FFKM gaskets for more corrosive liquids.
Designed with a 2-inch probe/load configuration for higher-viscosity products.
Combines chemical-resistant construction with the heavier probe arrangement for viscous chemical products.
Honeywell/industry catalog information also identifies longer-range and specialist designations such as:
NLUTI – Long Range
NXUTI – Extra Long Range
NHUTI – High-Pressure Chemical Version
NRUTI – HERMetic Rtex N Series for Open/Restricted Gauging
These are related product variants and should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
Official Honeywell data for the Gtex N Series includes:

Tape Accuracy: ±1.5 mm per 30 m
Temperature Accuracy: ±0.1°C from 0°C to 70°C
Temperature Resolution: selectable 0.01°C or 0.1°C
Sensor Temperature Range: approximately -40°C to +90°C
Tape Lengths: 15 m, 25 m, 35 m, 50 m, 55 m and 60 m depending on version
Display: 8-character backlit LCD
Indication: Audible and visible
Power: Approved 9 V batteries
Standard Gtex N Tank Overpressure: up to 0.3 bar on documented versions
Exact specification must always be checked against the individual model and serial number.
The HERMetic UTI meter is designed for hazardous cargo environments.
Honeywell lists hazardous-location approvals including ATEX / IECEx intrinsic-safety certifications, with documented configurations suitable for Zone 0 applications.
This is particularly important on:
Crude Oil Tankers • Product Tankers • Chemical Tankers • Marine Terminals • Petroleum Storage Facilities
The operator should always follow the vessel's safety procedure and the Honeywell manual before opening the vapor-control valve or taking measurements.
HERMetic UTImeter Gtex equipment is widely relevant to:
Crude Oil Tankers • Product Tankers • Chemical Tankers • Bunker Barges • Tank Terminals • Petroleum Storage Tanks • Marine Cargo Survey • Custody Transfer Operations • Fuel Oil Tanks • Shore Tanks
Typical users include:
Chief Officers • Cargo Officers • Marine Surveyors • Tanker Operators • Ship Managers • Terminal Operators • Cargo Inspectors • Marine Engineers
Check the approved battery, battery holder and battery contacts before assuming the electronic package has failed.
Inspect the probe, sensing head, tape connection and electronic box. Heavy contamination can also interfere with reliable detection.
Check sensor condition and verify the reading according to the manufacturer's temperature-verification procedure.
Clean the sensing probe carefully and verify the interface function before further use.
Inspect:
Tape Cleaning Device • Reel • Tape Protection Tube • Window Wiper • Tape Condition
Do not continue operating a damaged tape because an incorrect level reading or mechanical failure can result.
Inspect the battery first, followed by electronic-box and user-control functions.
Honeywell's operation/service documentation includes dedicated verification, adjustment and troubleshooting procedures.

These internal links are important because a buyer may search using:

and Google can better understand that all of these pages belong to the same marine tank-gauging product cluster.
Even ships equipped with fixed radar or servo tank-gauging systems still require portable gauging equipment for verification, cargo surveys and operational checks.
A portable UTI meter can independently verify:
Cargo Level • Cargo Temperature • Free Water
without relying entirely on the fixed tank-gauging system.
For tanker operations, this makes a reliable and properly maintained portable UTI meter a very useful cargo-control instrument.
UTI refers to the instrument's three primary functions:
Ullage • Temperature • Interface
It measures tank ullage/liquid level. The measured level is then used with the vessel's tank calibration tables to determine cargo quantity.
Yes. The instrument provides continuous liquid-temperature measurement using an electronic temperature sensor.
Yes. Oil-water interface detection is one of its principal functions.
Yes. Standard hydrocarbon versions are intended for petroleum and hydrocarbon cargo applications.
Yes. Gtex N Chem uses chemical-resistant FFKM sealing materials for applicable corrosive cargoes.
Honeywell lists versions with 15, 25, 35, 50, 55 and 60 meter tape lengths, depending on configuration.
Honeywell states that the N-Series sensor is factory calibrated and stores its own temperature characteristics, so changing the sensor or tape does not require a new calibration in the normal arrangement.
