Sperry Marine Gyro Repeater
Sperry Marine
New product
The Sperry Marine Type 5016 Bearing Repeater is an analogue marine compass repeater designed to display heading information received from the vessel’s main gyrocompass system.
The photographed unit is identified by STO No. 074880-0001-000 and Type 5016-0000-00. Its large 360°/10° compass-card display allows bridge personnel to observe the vessel’s heading clearly and take navigational bearings when installed with the appropriate bearing device.

Sperry Marine’s official certification documentation identifies P/N 074880-0001-xxx as a bearing repeater used with its approved gyrocompass arrangements, including several NAVIGAT systems. Exact compatibility must be checked against the vessel’s wiring, interface and system revision. View the official Sperry Marine certification document.
A bearing repeater receives heading data from the vessel’s master gyrocompass and reproduces that heading at another location. This allows officers to read the vessel’s true heading without being positioned beside the master compass.
The Type 5016 is normally installed on a bridge wing, open bridge area, bearing stand or bulwark-mounted bracket. When used with a compatible azimuth device, it can assist with taking visual bearings of ships, landmarks and navigational objects.
Heading information is transmitted from the gyrocompass or data-distribution equipment through an RS-422 serial connection. The internal drive system positions the rotating compass card to correspond with the vessel’s heading.
The DIM– and DIM+ controls adjust the illumination for daytime or night-time navigation. When a suitable PV23 prismatic azimuth device is installed, the officer can use the repeater for taking absolute or relative bearings.
The Type 5016 bearing repeater is commonly associated with Sperry Marine and C. Plath gyrocompass installations. Relevant systems and related equipment may include:
The Sperry 4881-AB is frequently referenced as an older related bearing-repeater model. However, a retrofit should not be treated as automatically plug-and-play. Always verify the part number, supply voltage, RS-422 wiring, terminal box, mounting dimensions and data format before replacement.
Check the power supply, fuse, RS-422 signal, connection polarity, terminal box and incoming gyro heading data.
The compass cards may require synchronisation. Compare the repeater reading with the master gyro before changing configuration or alignment.
Inspect the communication cable, shielding, connectors and terminal connections. Electrical noise or a weak RS-422 signal can cause unstable operation.
Check the DIM controls, internal illumination circuit, supply voltage and related PCB connections.
Condensation may indicate damaged sealing, an incorrectly closed housing or deteriorated cable glands. Watertight units should be opened only by qualified service personnel.
Inspect the trunnions, bushings, mounting ring and bracket. The repeater should move freely without excessive play or jamming.
The Type 5016 provides an immediate and easily understandable heading display. Its large analogue scale is readable in bright daylight and during night navigation, while the gimbal-mounted construction makes it suitable for exposed bridge-wing installations.
It also remains important for vessels operating established Sperry Marine gyrocompass systems where maintaining original compatibility is more practical than redesigning the complete heading-distribution system.
Is the Sperry 5016 a master gyrocompass?
No. It is a repeater that displays heading information supplied by a master gyrocompass or heading-distribution system.
What is the part number of this unit?
The photographed unit shows STO No. 074880-0001-000 and Type 5016-0000-00.
Can it replace a Sperry 4881-AB?
It is widely referenced as a later related replacement, but the wiring, mounting arrangement, interface and terminal box must be technically verified.
Does the unit include a terminal box or bearing stand?
These may be separate accessories. Confirm the exact supplied components before ordering.
What information is required for a quotation?
Send photographs of the front, nameplate, rear connections and existing installation. Also provide the gyro model, required quantity, vessel voltage and delivery country.
