Governor – Marine Engine Governor
Woodward, Inc.
New product
The WOODWARD UG-8L is a proven mechanical-hydraulic lever governor used to control the speed and fuel delivery of marine diesel engines, dual-fuel engines, generator engines and other prime movers.
It belongs to Woodward’s established Universal Governor—or UG—family. This governor mechanically connects to an engine’s fuel rack, fuel pump control shaft or fuel valve linkage and adjusts fuel delivery whenever engine speed changes.
The photographed unit is clearly marked WOODWARD TYPE UG-8L. It includes manual speed adjustment, an oil-level sight glass, compensation adjustment and top-mounted auxiliary equipment.

Specifications and configuration should be confirmed against the individual governor part number and original engine documentation.
The UG-8L governor automatically reacts whenever engine load changes.
When load increases, engine speed initially falls. The governor detects the reduction and moves the fuel-control linkage toward increased fuel delivery.
When load decreases, engine speed initially rises. The governor reduces fuel delivery until the selected speed is restored.
This continuous response helps maintain:
UG identifies Woodward’s Universal Governor family.
The 8 identifies the governor’s output-capacity class, while L indicates a lever-type configuration.
The UG-8L is different from a standard UG-8 dial governor in its control arrangement and available auxiliary features. Therefore, UG-8, UG-8L, UG-8PL and other UG-family models should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
The front panel clearly confirms:
The identification fields for Part No., Serial No., Governor RPM and Customer’s No. are blank. Exact replacement matching will therefore require additional information from the original engine, governor documents or mounting configuration.

A WOODWARD UG-8L typically contains:

Typical mechanical-hydraulic governor schematic showing the flyweights, pilot valve, power piston, oil-pressure passages and compensation system. Always use the applicable Woodward manual for exact UG-8L servicing.
The front speed-setting shaft allows the required governor speed to be increased or decreased.
Before adjustment:
The governor should never be adjusted beyond the engine’s approved operating-speed range.
The compensation system prevents repeated overcorrection after a load change.
Incorrect compensation may cause:
If compensation is too low, the engine may continue hunting. If it is too high, response may become slow. Adjustment should be performed gradually by an experienced technician while observing engine response under controlled load changes.
Woodward documentation identifies several optional devices used with UG lever governors:
The photographed unit has top-mounted auxiliary hardware. Its exact function and operating pressure should be confirmed through its individual drawings or additional identification markings.
The WOODWARD UG-8L may be used on:
Common vessel applications include:

The engine and driven equipment must also be inspected because poor governing is not always caused by the governor itself.
High-frequency output-shaft movement may be caused by:

Do not rely on the governor as the engine’s only overspeed protection.
Oil leakage may result from:
Possible causes include:
Check:
The WOODWARD UG-8L is a mechanical-hydraulic governor and normally has no digital display or numerical fault-code system.
Related alarms are usually generated by the engine or generator monitoring system:
No numerical alarm code should be assigned directly to the UG-8L unless documented by the connected external control system.
Woodward advises selecting oil according to operating viscosity, temperature range, seal compatibility and service conditions.
The chosen oil should:
Consult Woodward’s current oil guidance rather than selecting oil only by brand name.
SM MARINE SERVICE™ can support sourcing of complete WOODWARD UG-8L governors and related spare parts, depending on availability.

Before ordering a replacement UG-8L, provide:
Because the photographed plate does not show its Part No., Serial No. or Governor RPM, matching should be based on additional engine records and physical configuration.
The WOODWARD UG-8L remains valuable because it offers:
Changing to a different governor may require modifications to the engine drive, fuel linkage, shutdown system, remote speed control and classification documentation. For many vessels, repairing or sourcing the correct UG-8L remains the most practical solution.
The UG-8L is a mechanical-hydraulic lever governor used to regulate the speed and fuel-control linkage of diesel, dual-fuel and other prime movers.
Both belong to the Woodward UG governor family, but the UG-8L is a lever-type configuration. Control arrangements and auxiliary devices may differ.
Woodward documentation lists a maximum output-shaft travel of 42 degrees, with approximately two-thirds of that travel recommended for normal fuel movement.
The official UG lever governor manual lists approximately 120 psi or 827 kPa for the UG-8.
Woodward documentation lists a recommended range of approximately 375–1500 rpm, with 1500 rpm as the recommended maximum constant operating speed.
Hunting may result from incorrect compensation, dirty or aerated oil, binding linkage, worn components, pilot-valve problems or unstable engine combustion.
No. Oil must be selected according to viscosity, temperature, seal compatibility and Woodward’s current hydraulic-control oil guidance.
No. It is primarily a mechanical-hydraulic device without a digital fault display. Related alarms are produced by the external engine-monitoring system.
No. The Part No., Serial No. and Governor RPM fields on the photographed panel are blank.
