The Woodward UG family is one of the best-known mechanical-hydraulic governor families used in industrial and marine engine control. The UG-8 senses changes in engine speed mechanically and uses internally pressurized governor oil to reposition its output shaft.
The output shaft is mechanically connected to the engine fuel rack, fuel pump linkage, throttle mechanism or another final control device. When engine load changes, the governor adjusts the fuel-control position to restore the selected operating speed.
Unlike modern electronic governors, the standard UG-8 does not depend on an electronic control PCB, external speed sensor or software configuration for its basic governing function. This makes it suitable for older ships and machinery where ruggedness, repairability and long service life are important.
The Woodward UG-8 is a self-contained mechanical-hydraulic speed governor. It combines mechanical speed sensing, hydraulic amplification and output-shaft movement in one housing.

Speed droop permits controlled speed reduction as load increases. It is especially important when two or more generators operate in parallel and must share load without instability.
The speed-setting control changes the governor’s reference speed. It may be used during setup, synchronization or normal engine-speed adjustment, depending on the installation.
The load-limit control restricts the maximum movement of the governor output shaft and therefore limits the maximum fuel command. On some applications, moving the load limit toward zero may also reduce fuel sufficiently for shutdown.
The idle-setting control establishes the lower operating-speed limit where the engine application requires a defined idle condition.

The Woodward UG-8 governor commonly incorporates:
Engine rotation drives the governor’s internal oil pump and speed-sensing mechanism. The oil pump generates the hydraulic pressure needed to operate the governor power piston.
If engine speed falls, the centrifugal force produced by the rotating ballhead decreases. The speeder-spring force then moves the pilot valve away from its neutral position. Pressurized oil is directed to the power piston, which moves the terminal shaft toward an increased-fuel position.
If engine speed rises, centrifugal force increases and moves the pilot valve in the opposite direction. Oil is redirected so that the power piston reduces the fuel command.
The compensation system provides temporary feedback to prevent continuous correction and speed oscillation. When properly adjusted, the engine reaches its selected speed quickly without excessive hunting or overshoot.
